Cute Valentine's Day Mani/Pedi

I'm back....at least for now. Last week, that lovely stomach bug made the rounds in our house, so I didn't do much besides rest on the couch, hover over the toilet, and take care of my little ones doing the same. Certainly no crafting was done.

I do want to share a few things with you really quick.

Second, I gave myself some really cute toenails for V-day and beyond. Of course, I went to take a picture and my camera battery was dead. And, I cannot find the charger anywhere! So, you're going to have to settle for my inspiration pic:

I got the idea from Pinterest, which featured this manicure by A Vain Woman. I love it!

I never paint my nails, though. I'm a little hard on my hands. So, I painted my toes instead. I used bright pink and white. Here's the steps, just in case you need them.

1. Prepare your nails by removing any old polish and lightly buffing. Paint a base coat if desired. I'm too lazy.

2. Paint your toenails alternating colors. I chose pink and white. Depending on your polish, you may need two coats. I'm cheap and buy cheap (but cute) polish, so I needed two coats. Clean up any stray polish with a cotton swab or tiny paintbrush dipped in polish remover.

3. When solid coats are dry, create polka dots- white on color, colored on white. I straightened a bobby pin and dipped one end into a dab of nail polish I had placed on a paper plate. It made the PERFECT sized polka dot for my nails. Use one end of the bobby pin for the white dots, the other end for the colored.

4. Let polka dots dry, then finish with a top-coat!

Happy Valentine's Day in advance! We don't have any exciting plans, thanks to it being a school night (pout). But we are going out on Saturday instead. What are you doing? Tell me and make me jealous.....

Girls Tiered Skirt

Well, I finally got back onto my sewing machine. I really am more of a crafter then a sewer (sewist? seamstress?). I really have to be in the mood to sew, and I have to have a big chunk of time, as I hate not not being able to finish a project once I've started it.

I wanted to make a cute skirt for my daughter, so I decided to try out the cute Tiered Skirt Tutorial from Make It and Love It. Her tutorials are so easy to follow- I highly recommend them! Anyway- here's how mine turned out:

Anyway, I used a cotton print that I've had in my stash for awhile, and got to work. It came together in about 2 hours, only because I'm kind of slow at sewing.

My daughter loves it- so I'm happy I finally made something for her. It's a tad longer than I would have liked, but I know it will fit for a long time. Next time I think I'll try one in knit!

Game Day Snacks- Cereal Treat

It's Mouth-Watering Wednesday, and let me tell you....this one is NOT healthy, will go straight to your hips, and will make you an addict. But I promise- it's worth it!

I was first introduced to Cereal Treat at my mother-in-law's house, and the recipe was provided to me by my husband's aunt. You may have made a version of this yourself- but this is how we like it. (I hope I'm not sharing any family secrets!)

I usually make it for New Year's Eve, Super Bowl, and other times where people will be hanging around, snacking, all day or night.

Here's what you need:

1 large Box of Rice Chex cereal

I large Box of Golden Grahams

1 16 oz bag Slivered Almonds (optional)

2 Cups Coconut (optional)

2 Cups Sugar

2 Cups Karo Syrup

2 Cups Butter or Margarine

Mix cereals, coconut, and almonds in a large bowl. Set aside. (I'm allergic to coconut so you won't see that in my pictures.) You'll also notice I'm not a slave to brand names. I don't think it matters when your cereal is covered in buttery deliciousness.

In a saucepan, melt butter/margarine, then add sugar and Karo syrup.

Mix together and simmer for 25 minutes. In case you don't know, simmering means to cook at a temperature just hot enough for tiny, rapid bubbles to escape.

Mixture should turn a light caramel color.

Pour over mixture in bowl and toss until cereal mix is well covered.

Lay out on cookie sheets to dry.

Place it in your favorite bowl to serve, and watch as your guests return over and over for "just one more bite". Delicious!

Now, on to today's project.

We moved my baby out of his crib, which means he's not really a baby anymore! Sniff.... So, that means my boys are sharing a room, and my daughter gets her own room! Makeover!

My daughter, who is almost seven, decided on a ballet theme for her room. I'm not one for characters and themes in bedding- I prefer to choose a color scheme and use the accessories to create the theme. So, here is my first project for her room: Ballerina Vinyl Wall Art.

I cut these shapes from adhesive vinyl with my Silhouette Cameo. After adhering them to the wall, I thought- wouldn't it be fun if I gave them little tutus? So, I cut up some tulle from one of my daughter's old tutus, then scrunched it up and hot-glued it to the ballerinas. I don't know if I should have used hot glue, but I did and it worked great! I love the three-dimensional look!

I finished it off with a quote appropriate for the room.

Simple, fun, and best of all- free! (Well, kind of. I had everything on hand.)

Valentine's Day is coming up quickly, and man are there some great V-day projects out there! I was tempted to make this entirely v-day themed, but I'm holding out another week or so! Still, I do have one great Valentine's-themed project to share with you:

2. I love family trees. I love the idea of remembering those who came before you, and I love the personal touch it brings to your decor. 3. If you have a little boy with a superhero obsession, you might want to either A) Bookmark this and begin making it immediately or B) Shield them from this project so you don't have to redecorate their room. My little boy would love this, but we just made him a baseball-themed room. I'm making sure he doesn't see this and go crazy.

My Go-To Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe

I love me some chocolate chip cookies! They are delicious and so easy to make. I know there are a thousand and one chocolate chip cookie recipes out there, but this one has become my go-to recipe.

All-time Favorite Chocolate Chip Cookies

- adapted from The Essential Mormon Cookbook

Ingredients:

1 C. butter or margarine, softened

3/4 c. white sugar

1 C. brown sugar

2 eggs

1 tsp. vanilla (sometimes I add an extra 1/2 tsp.)

3 C. flour

3/4 tsp salt

3/4 tsp baking soda

1 12-oz bag chocolate chips

1. Cream together butter, sugar eggs, and vanilla.

2. In a separate bowl (or not, if you're me), sift together flour, salt, and baking soda. Add to creamed mixture and beat well.

3. Stir in chocolate chips.

4. Drop onto greased cookie sheet by heaping tablespoons (I use my 1 inch cookie dough scoop).

5. Bake at 350 F for 10 minutes until lightly browned.

Makes about 3 dozen cookies (unless you eat the dough in between batches)

I love 'em. They're yummy. They're easy to whip up for an after-school snack, or for a friend who needs a pick-me-up.

Winter Bucket List and Clipboard

Happy Monday everyone. Today I'm sharing a project I originally made for a guest post at Naptime Crafters. If you missed it, keep reading:

Today's project came about from what I call the "winter blahs". It seems like every year, once Christmas is over, the rest of the winter just...drags....on. There's no major holidays, the house feels empty without my cozy holiday decor, and it's cold (well, maybe not where I live in Phoenix- but hey! 50's is cold for me!)

I came up, aided by many different ideas I found online and from friends, with a list of some things to do in the winter. I'm calling it a Winter Bucket List, and with it, I'll show you how to make a cute altered clipboard to display it on.

First, remove the clip. All you need is a screwdriver. Unscrew the screws and don't lose the pieces!

On your scrapbook paper, trace around your clipboard base to make it fit perfectly. I chose this one based in blues, because the colors and the swirls on it made it just feel like winter to me. Cut it out and Mod Podge it on. Trim if necessary.

Add the clipboard back on. Poke holes through the scrapbook paper for easy entry, then screw tight with your screwdriver.
Embellish your clipboard as desired. I used my Silhouette to create a vinyl label, using text I created and a snowflake.

Now, I think this looks pretty great by itself! (not that I'm biased or anything).

But, I put together this printable for you to add to your clipboard.

I know this isn't an original idea- but almost all the lists I found had holiday activities included, and I wanted one that was just for winter. So, here you go. Simply click on the image below and save it to your computer to print. It looks great up to an 8x10, but I printed mine as a 5x7 to fit on the clipboard.

(If you don't want a clipboard, this would be great to frame and use a dry-erase marker to check off your activities!)

The Best Snickerdoodle Recipe Ever

It's my first ever Mouth-Watering Wednesday, and I hope you are ready to try something delicious.

First off, I have a disclaimer. I'm not a professional baker by any means. I often cut corners or use shortcuts to save money or time, and I tweak recipes to make it work for me. I probably don't do things "the correct way", but I make a lot of cookies and goodies, and they usually turn out pretty delicious anyway. It's kind of like math to me- who cares how you get the answer, as long as it's right? (Don't cringe, math teachers. I was never very good at math anyway!)

So, today, I'm sharing with you my favorite Snickerdoodle recipe. I have tried many over the years, and this one produces deliciously yummy, soft cookies covered with just the right amount of cinnamon and sugar. I originally found in in Essential Mormon Celebrations, and have tweaked it just a little.

Gather your ingredients. Here's what you'll need:
1 3/4 C. Sugar (divided)
1 C. margarine or butter, softened
2 eggs
2 3/4-3 1/4 C. flour
2 tsp. cream of tartar
1 tsp. baking soda
1/4 tsp salt
2 tsp. cinnamon

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees and prepare your cookie sheets. The recipe says 400, so you can do that if you want, but here's my secret to perfect cookies every time---

Bake cookies at 350 degrees for 10 minutes, no matter what the recipe says. When I do this, my cookies turn out exactly how I like them, 99 percent of the time. They are nice and firm on the outside, moist and chewy (but not doughy) on the inside. I use a typical electric oven, so you may have to adjust for your own, but be brave and give it a try on a test batch. (What's the worst that could happen? If they're not quite baked, just bake them a few more minutes. Or eat the dough. Yum.)

Continuing on....
1. Soften your butter or margarine. I hardly ever bake with butter, mostly for money reasons. My favorite substitute to bake with is Imperial margarine, but I'm sure others are good too. You can leave it out until it softens or put it in the microwave for about 15 seconds. Just don't melt it.

2. In a large bowl, cream together 1 1/2 cups sugar, your butter/margarine, and your eggs.

You'll know it's ready when it looks like this:

3. In another bowl, sift together flour, cream of tartar, baking soda, and salt. (** I hardly ever do this, because I'm lazy. I usually just dump it all together in one bowl. You should probably follow the directions, but my cookies turn out great anyway.)

Combine dry ingredients with creamed mixture. Don't overmix. (** I use my Kitchenaid, but you can do this by hand. Some people swear by hand mixing, but again, I'm lazy.)

4. In a small bowl mix together 1/4 cup sugar and your cinnamon. Set aside.

Shape dough into 1 inch balls.. I find my dough to be pretty sticky. You don't want to add too much flour, so you can do two things. Either put it in the fridge to chill for an hour or so, or you can do what I do-- break out the cookie dough scoop.

Mine is a 1 inch scoop, so I fill it and scrape it on the side of the bowl to flatten it.

Then I release the dough into the cinnamon/sugar mixture, and lightly roll it around with my fingers.

Place it on your cookie sheet. (** I use a silicon mat from Wilton on my cookie sheets. It saves me from having to clean cookie sheets, and it keeps the bottoms of the cookies from getting too well-done. Love it.)

Bake the cookies, as discussed above, for 10 minutes. When they come out of the oven they will be all puffy,
like this:

But if you let them sit for a few minutes, they will flatten out and crackle across the top, just like a perfect Snickerdoodle will.

These are best served warm or on the same day you make them, though they also freeze well. Store any leftover in an airtight container.

New Year, New Ideas

Happy New Year, everyone! I hope your holidays were wonderful! I sure enjoyed the time off!

There was travel involved. The Happiest Place on Earth was sure kind to my family.

There were presents- for Christmas, and for birthdays!

There were great times with my husband and children-- all were home for the past two weeks!

There wasn't a whole lot of crafting, and not a whole lot of blogging either.

To be honest, I really enjoyed it. I didn't miss the pressures of not only creating a new project, but photographing it, editing it, and creating a post for each day.

I love crafting, and I love blogging- but I'm not happy with how my hobby has taken over my life. I have three young children. My husband is the bishop of our church, and is gone A LOT. I try to cook and clean, exercise, run errands. I want to play with my children, teach my piano lessons, prepare my Sunday School lessons. Read my scriptures. Grow spiritually. Cultivate friendships.

As a wife and mother, I'm falling short. I'm finding it hard to do everything I want to do, because I get sucked into the computer every day. I honestly don't know how you all balance your lives. It's just not working for me. I don't want my blog to be a business, or a full-time job. It was started as a hobby, and I feel, for me, it should stay that way.

I like the gratification of other people enjoying my work, or being inspired by it. However, the time I have to put into each project vs. the amount of feedback I get is sometimes very disheartening. It's frustrating to watch a new blogger skyrocket to 1000 followers when I've struggled for almost 2 years to get 600! There are thousands of craft blogs- and I'm sure no one would miss me too much if I went away.

I don't want to go away- I just want to ease up a little. I'm going to be changing a few things around here. First of all, I am going to back away from being sponsored. While I appreciate the small amount of revenue sponsors bring in, and I enjoy spotlighting talented ladies and their shops, I just don't have the time to promote them responsibly. If I can't make it worth their money, it's not something I want to do. After each of my sponsors finishes their contract, I won't be renewing them. So that will gradually go away.

Second, I'm deleting my Twitter account. I hardly ever use it. I just can't keep up with it. I'm not sure I even "get" Twitter :) I plan on keeping my Facebook account, at least for now- if for nothing else than to let you know what's going on over here.

Third, my blogging schedule will change. I'm going to try to continue to blog three days a week. It might not always happen. I know it's easier to read my blog if you know what to expect, but if life gets in the way, I might miss a post here or there. What I post is going to be a little different too. Here's my plan:

Monday- Made It Mondays- showcasing a project I created- tutorials often included.
Wednesday- Mouth-Watering Wednesdays- a new recipe I tried this week (most often sweets!)
Friday- Feature Friday- I love showing off projects each week that catch my eye. I'm going to continue this- just move it to a new day.

I'll still be open to fee-free product reviews and giveaways, and of course I love to guest post on other blogs. But I want to get back to what this blog was meant to be in the first place: a place for me to keep track of the projects I make, and share them with others who might be inspired by them.

Thank you for your support over the last year and a half. I truly appreciate every comment, every pin, every email, and every kind thought you've had about my blog and my projects. I hope you'll stay with me as I get back to who I really am: "Occasionally Crafty" Valerie.

Cinnamon Applesauce Quick Bread

So, I not-so-smart(ly)-in-hindsight made the decision to take my family to Disneyland this week. I know we'll have a blast, but going on a trip the week before Christmas (and not getting back until Christmas Eve!) means all my baking, shopping, wrapping, gift-giving, packing, shipping, etc. had to be done by today. It's not. And still here I am on the computer when I have work to do!

I'm going to be gone all week, so I'm giving myself a Christmas present and taking some time off. I'll be back next Monday as usual. But, I can't leave my blog with nothing on it, so I'm posting a quick, delicious recipe for you.

I found this recipe for Applesauce Cinnamon Quick Bread at Lemon Drop, and it is delicious! These make a great gift for friends or neighbors. I made mini-loaves for all the workers in our Primary (children's Sunday School). It was easy, and my house smelled delicious as they were baking. Here it is:

RECIPE:
*adapted source recipe, Cinnamon Applesauce Bread, McCormick

WHAT YOU NEED

2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
1 tablespoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 egg
1 cup chunky applesauce
1 cup firmly packed light brown sugar
2/3 cup milk
2 tablespoons vegetable oil

MAKE IT

PREHEAT oven to 350F
SPRAY a large loaf pan with baking spray (preferably the kind with added flour)
IN LARGE BOWL, whisk together first 4 ingredients
IN MEDIUM BOWL, whisk together remaining ingredients
FOLD WET INGREDIENTS into dry ingredients blending just until combined
POUR into loaf pan and smooth top
FEEL FREE to sprinkle with some turbinado sugar now if you like
BAKE 55-60 MINUTES or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean
(For mini loaves, I baked eight at a time for about 30 minutes, and it was perfect!)

1. This Gift-Wrapped Gallery from Mom on Timeout is such a creative way to make a room look extra festive! I love that she took something she already had (her family pictures) and dressed them up to make a huge impact in the room.

2. This DIY Vinyl Peppermint Plate from Burton Avenue is so cute! It would be great to display or to use with some treats for your neighbors!

3. I don't have enough decor that is Christ-centered. It's amazingly hard to find, except for nativity scenes and the like. So, I really love this Tabletop Manger from The Happy Scraps- it's the perfect way to help your family remember the reason for the season.

Scrappin' Wednesday- One Year Old!

This week, I am sharing a layout that I put together to celebrate my youngest son's first birthday! We don't have much family in the area, so we kept his first birthday small and simple. I took the opportunity to try my first-ever fondant cake, and I think it turned out pretty cute! I also made him a little shirt for the day, and we got him a fun activity board/walk-behind to play with. We enjoyed our special day together!

Neighbor Gift? "Joy" Ornaments

Happy Monday, everyone! I'm starting to feel the "Christmas Crunch". Anyone else? It's probably because we are heading to The Happiest Place on Earth next week, and won't be back until just before Christmas! I have to do all my baking, shopping, mailing, gift-giving, etc. by the end of the week! Yikes!

In case you're searching for a simple gift to make for neighbors, friends, or even a class, I have an idea for you. This year, my friends and I made these simple "Joy" ornaments for the children at church.

They're simple to make. We used 2x2 blocks (which I buy in bulk from www.craftparts.com). We painted them, Mod Podged some paper scraps on the front, and finished with Joy in vinyl letters. You could easily use letter stickers or even a Sharpie to do something similar if you don't have access to vinyl.

To hang them, I drilled tiny holes in the top, then screwed in eye hooks from the hardware store. A length of ribbon makes a great hanger. We finished by writing our name and the year on the back.

We made them with all different colors and papers. I'm really happy with how they turned out. Pair these with some cookies or treats and you've got a great gift! I'm giving these Oreo Truffles to my neighbors and my daughter's teachers. Mmmm.......

2012 Primary Theme Printable- Choose the Right

I've been a Primary president for over three years. The Primary is the children's organization at my church- kind of the children's Sunday School. I LOVE it. I would gladly do it for three more years.

Unfortunately, my time is ending, and I'll be asked to do another job in my church, and let someone else have the amazing opportunity of working with the children and their families each week.

Every year, Primary has a theme that we focus on throughout the year. Next year's theme is "Choose the Right". I love this theme- it's so simple, so basic, and yet so important.

We always display the theme on a front table in our Primary room. Before I knew my time in the Primary would be ending, I created a poster to use for the theme. It has both the theme for the year and the scripture.
I don't know if they'll still use it- but this is the display we would have at our front table.

On a side note- I absolutely LOVE this picture of President Monson, the prophet and leader of our church. We made these fun blocks as part of a craft night at our church. I love seeing his smiling face each day.

Welcome to Three Things Thursday- where I can share with you some things that have inspired me this week. As I'm sure you can guess, Christmas is on most every crafter's mind these days. There are so many amazing home decor projects out there that I almost feel overwhelmed! I've got to choose a few to do, and then just smile and be happy at the rest.

Here are three Christmas projects that inspired me this week:

Welcome to Scrappin' Wednesday, where I get to show you a glimpse of our family life through my digital scrapbook pages. This week's page was created on the new version of My Memories Suite, v3. This is the same software you have the chance to enter! I really enjoy using it- it's so easy and user-friendly.

This week, I'm sharing a layout I created with my son's 11-month pictures. At this age, he didn't much like sitting still for a photo. Instead, he liked to chew on his toys, practice standing on the couch, play hide and seek with Mommy, and even cry a little. His first year had lots of grumpy crying! (Am I a terrible mother for taking pictures of him at his grumpiest? )

Gifts Given and Received

Well, last week sure was a doozy. I had a great, quiet Thanksgiving with my family, who were pretty much all sick. How about you? I really enjoyed the time off from driving kids to school, dance, and everywhere else. Being sick sometimes makes you stop and just be- which we often forget to do in our busy, busy lives.

Before I go on with my post, I've decided, due to sickness and Thanksgiving, to extend my My Memories Suite giveaway until the end of this week. I'll announce the winner next Monday. Go here for more details, and to enter!

Well, we can OFFICIALLY move on to Christmas now! I'm really feeling Christmas-y because I have both given and received my first Christmas gifts! I participated in the Craftaholics Anonymous Handmade Gift Exchange. It's been fun getting to know a fellow crafter. I had my friend Lindzie from My Creative Place, and I decided after our emails to send her some things to help her get ready for Christmas.

She told me her colors are blue, silver, and black, so not your traditional Christmas colors. I found some pretty papers that I thought would complement her color scheme, and painted some Noel blocks for her.

I was making myself one of eighteen25's Christmas Planners, so I doubled up and made one for Lindzie too. I love that thing- I've used it a lot already!

Finally, I included a few baby washcloths for the baby boy she is having around Christmas time! Wow, as if the holidays aren't busy enough! I can't imagine having a baby right then!

Shortly after I sent my gifts off, I received Lindzie's gifts in return. She sent me a fabulous Christmas wall hanging, which is displayed in my kitchen.

She also gave me some great ornaments for my tree. The "E" is for my last name.

She also sent me a mini-canvas that says Let it Snow- it is so cute! My pictures of it seem to have mysteriously disappeared, though..... I'll have to take some more once my camera battery recharges :(
She was so cute to include some funny recipe cards and a notepad, too.

Scrappin' TUESDAY- My Memories Suite Review and Giveaway!

Welcome to a "special" edition of Scrappin' Wednesday- on Tuesday! I'm moving things up a day this week so I can have my Thanksgiving free!

If you've been reading my blog this year, you know that every week, I share a digitally-scrapbooked page that I created. It's really helped motivate me to catch up on my scrapbooking. So, I was super excited when I was contacted by the company that makes My Memories Suite, a top rated, best-selling digital scrapbook software. I was offered the opportunity a free copy of their product to use, review it, and give one away to one of you! (more on that in a minute-)

Many people use Photoshop or Photoshop Elements for their digital scrapbooking. Those programs are great, but expensive- often prohibitively so. They also have a steep learning curve. So, I know lots of people are on the lookout for good alternatives to those programs. My Memories Suite might be what you're looking for.

1. It is affordable- the full software costs $39.97, and that includes a good amount of papers, embellishments, and such. If you use my coupon code that I'll give you later, you can save $10 on your purchase, making it even more affordable!

2. It is easy to understand and navigate. You can choose pictures and embellishments from the menu on the left, then use the menu on the right to edit them. On the page, you simply drag and drop.

3. You can use all the digital "stuff" you already own. This was a big concern of mine. I've spent a lot of hours, and a decent amount of money collecting digital scrapbooking kits, elements, word art, etc. I was worried I'd be unable to use them, but you can simply add them as a photo, or even import them into the program and organize them as you desire.

Remember this page from last week? All my own elements, created with My Memories Suite.

4. You can create other things besides digital scrapbooks. I used MMS to create a holiday card. (This is an old picture, so I'm not actually sending these ones out). It was so easy to do!

You could also use it to create a "slideshow" of sorts from a recent trip. You even have the options to share your albums by printing them, exporting as JPEG so you can have them printed, creating a hardbound book, creating an interactive "movie", or sharing on Facebook.

5. It is compatible with Windows/PC and MAC. If you're a MAC user, you've got a version just for you!

Now, the few concerns I have:

1. Pictures Pixelate. I have used other software that enables my digital elements to change sizes without pixelating. On My Memories Suite, I have to be much more careful in the dimensions I choose. It seems like there is less leeway there.
2. Albums v. Pages- I wish I could just create a page at a time, instead of having to create a new album each time. I currently have to create or open an album,create a new page in the album, and then save that page to the album. It's just not the way I usually work- sometimes I create out of order- my pages don't necessarily go together, so it's just clunkier for me.
3. I would love a "group" option for my elements/text, so I could move things all together. Though I hear that version 3 will be offering that.....

Quick Baby Gift

Happy Monday, all! Man, was it a weekend. I have been sick, sick, sick. I lost my voice. I can't stop coughing. I keep falling asleep on the couch. It has not been pleasant. It was bad timing, too. This weekend, my husband was called to be the new bishop of our ward (congregation)!

If you are LDS, you know that is a life-changing thing. If you're not, you can read more about it here. We are excited, overwhelmed, apprehensive, etc. I am excited to get to know the members of our ward more, and know that it will be a great opportunity for service. Still, there are a lot of hard things and sacrifices that will be made. I don't know how this will relate to blogging, but there are chances changes in my family life will cause some changes here. We will see....

I also did some silly and fun things this weekend. I went to the Breaking Dawn midnight showing with some of my girl friends. It was tons of fun! I also went to a baby shower for my sister-in-law, and that's where this post (finally) comes in:

I gave my sis-in-law a whole bunch of my old boy clothes and baby stuff, so I don't know that a shower gift was really necessary. Still, I wanted to give her something that I made, so I did this:

The printable comes from an idea I saw on Pinterest. It was not linked back correctly, however, so if you know who originally created this, I'd love to know so I can give proper credit! I used Picnik to create my own version using her son's name.

I paired it with a few handmade washcloths and some deliciously-rich baby shampoo. Cute and practical.

With the holidays coming up, the crafters are getting really creative, and it's getting harder to just choose three projects. But, since I should actually get off the computer sometime, I'll resist doing Thirty Things Thursday. Here are three projects I love from this week's linky parties:

1. This Christmas Twig Vase from I Can't Stop Crafting is beautiful! You could spray paint this in any color to match your holiday decor. It would also be great just for fall in general, no?

2. Shirley from I "Shir" Can Craft shared not only her beautiful Fall Rosette Wreath, but her tutorial on how to make "lollipop" rosettes. I always wondered how to get this look, as opposed to my messy, twisty rosettes. Thanks Shirley!

Thanksgiving- "Give Thanks" Vinyl Plate

Happy Monday, everyone! I hope you all had a fun weekend! I had Super Saturday (our yearly craft day at church), spent some time with our family, and enjoyed some rain in our parched little corner of the desert! I've got some pictures of my crafts coming soon, but today I want to share with you a simple, cheap home decor craft for fall or Thanksgiving. This is by no means a new idea, but I finally got around to making my own vinyl charger:

I bought this metallic brown charger at Michael's for a dollar. I used my Silhouette Studio software to design the vinyl decal, cut it, and applied it to the center of the charger. That's it! Honestly, the hardest part about this was trying to get a photo of it without my reflection in it! (Don't look closely)

With all the different colored chargers, and all the holiday sayings, the options on this are pretty much endless, so go buy yourself a few and get to work! Mine joined my fall flowers on top of our entertainment center. Love!

Here are three things that caught my eye this week:

1. I adore this Christmas Table Runner by Knotted-Thread. I love that it's Christmas-y without being too literal. And the zig zags are super cute!

2. I really need a pair of boots. And when I buy some, I'll need some boot socks. In His Grip gives us an easy way to make your own Sweater Boot Socks. Love them!

3. A Diamond in the Stuff shows us the cute jewelry she made with her old keys- her Junk Jewelry. What a great way to reuse something we all probably have hanging around at home. My favorite is the old key with the pearl and wire chain!

Scrappin' Wednesday- On Grandpa's Boat

In central Oregon, there is a lake everyone in my husband's family refers to as "the lake" or "the cove". I'm not sure what its real name is.....

Whenever we visit in the summer, we beg Grandpa to break out the boat and take a trip up to the cove. There is a nice picnic area we often spend time in, near a wading part of the lake. The cousins take turns riding on the boat, water-skiing, or being pulled on rafts.

On this trip, we had just a few of us, so we spent the day out on the boat. The water was FREEZING (though that didn't stop my kids from venturing in!) We enjoyed the beautiful scenery and watched the brave ones freeze their little tushies off. My youngest, not even one at the time, really did NOT enjoy having to wear a life vest, as you'll see in the pictures below!

Sweet Scallops Tote- My Version

Are you participating in the Sweet Scallops Tote Sew-Along from See Kate Sew? I heard about it from Mandy at Sugarbee Crafts, and I'm so glad I did. Emboldened by my success with the Layla bag I made here, I decided to try my sewing skills again. I finished my bag last week, and I'm sharing it with you today!

Here it is:

I made the bag using Riley Blake fabric from the Sugar and Spice line, as well as some leftover canvas and lining I had from some previous projects.

My 2 year old thinks it belongs to him. He quite enjoyed filling it with toys.

But really, it's a nice piece of arm candy for me. I'm excited to take it out and about with me.

Welcome to Three Things Thursday, where I spotlight some of YOUR projects that I've found as I've searched through the link parties each week!

This week is full of cuteness for little girls. I'm not sure why these jumped out at me, since my "little" girl is now 6 1/2 and she's probably not getting a little sister, but still.... I guess there's always gifts!

Here are three things that caught my eye this week:

1. This "Puffle" Skirt from A Home, Made is just adorable! She gives a detailed tutorial too, so click over to bookmark it for your next sewing project!

2. These Sparkle Boots from Good Little Things would be any little girl's dream! I'm in love with them, for sure.

3. I love this Baby Girl's Blessing Dress from The Tanners. The ruffles and rosettes are right up my alley- and I love that it's handmade!

In our church, babies are given a name and a blessing shortly after birth- it's not a baptism, but it's a special day nonetheless. I love to see what other mothers choose for their little girls to wear! My daughter wore a dress my mom made out of my wedding dress. My name and her name are embroidered into the hem, and if she chooses to use it, she can have her daughter(s) name(s) added as well.

This is the best full length shot I had of her so you could see some the fabric and some of the lace appliques from my wedding dress. She's adorable. Not that I'm biased....

Scrappin' Wednesday- 10 months

I'm starting to feel the heat- I was hoping to be caught up in my scrapbooking by the end of the year.

Excuse me while I stop laughing.

I'm up to August 2010, which means I am still over a year behind! With two months left to go, maybe I will be able to finish 2010, at least.

Anyway, I should get on to today's layout. I loved taking pictures of my kids each month of their first year, to see how much they changed. It's one of my favorite traditions. Today I am sharing a layout created with my son's 10 month pictures.

Pinterest Envy- Button Clock

I haven't seen a tutorial to make this particular kind of clock, but using instructions I found across the web, it was easy to adapt for a fabric clock.

Materials needed:
1 embroidery hoop (mine was about 7 inches)
Sturdy fabric of choice- I used burlap, but you could use anything
12 cute buttons
Embroidery Thread to match your buttons
Hot glue (optional)
Scissors
3/8 in or smaller Clock Movement Kit- about $7 at any craft store, or cheaper with a coupon!

Here's how I made mine:

First, I cut my burlap to fit my embroidery hoop, leaving enough fabric to stretch it taut on all sides. You may have to double layer your fabric, depending on how thin it is. You need something sturdy, and you don't want anything see-through. I placed it in the hoop and pulled it tight on the front and back.

Then, I laid out where I wanted my buttons to go and marked them with a water-soluble pen.

Next, I found the center of my button circle and marked it. This is where you will assemble your clock movement kit.

Now, mine didn't come with any directions, so I had to do some searching to find out how to put it together. Mine was an Artminds brand, but it is pretty standard. Here's how it goes together:

Take all the clock parts out of the package and disassemble anything that is put together.
1. Cut a small slit in your fabric- enough to push the arm of the big black movement piece together. The rubber washer goes on the back- between the black box and your fabric.
2. Slide brass washer (circle) over the shaft
3. Attach the hex nut (the other larger brass pice)- screw it tight to the fabric
4. Gently but firmly press the hour hand onto the shaft at the 12:00 position.
5. Gently but firmly press the minute hand onto the shaft at the 12:00 position.
6. Gently screw minute hand nut (small brass circle) in place
7. Gently but firmly press your minute hand onto the shaft.

Once my movement kit was attached, I hot glued it to the back of the fabric for extra stability.

Next, I hot-glued my buttons in place- just a tiny dot. This isn't necessary, but it saves me a lot of time in the next step.

I hand-sewed my buttons to the fabric using two strands of embroidery thread. I think I made three or four stitches per button. Just make sure they're on good!

All that's left is making it look pretty. Carefully trim the excess fabric away from your hoop. I basically put my scissors flush with the hoop, then cut all the way around. I sealed the ends by drawing a thin line of hot glue across the cut edge. This keeps it secure and keeps it from fraying.

That's it- pop a battery into the movement kit and you've got a cute (and functional) clock for your craft room, or anywhere else you need a little cuteness. Can you imagine the possibilities with all the cute buttons out there?

I'm not sure how I'm going to survive this weekend. Tonight is our church's Trunk or Treat, which I am in charge of. This weekend, our Primary (children's Sunday School) is putting on its annual program, which I am also in charge of. Tomorrow is our "dress rehearsal" and pizza party (which, yes, I am in charge of), and the program is on Sunday. That's on top of normal responsibilities, like, say, laundry. Someone give me energy now!

Halloween Embroidery Hoop Art

I originally created this for a guest post at Love and Sugar Kisses.

I had a lot of fun putting together a fun Halloween project for you. I came up with this cute Halloween Embroidery Hoop Wall Hanging.

I have to give a shout-out to Nike from Thrive, who turned me on to these cute Riley Blake's Halloween Fabrics. (You can see how she used them here). They are just so darn cute. I picked out some of my favorite characters to use in my Halloween decorating. Let me tell you- I am not so much into the ghoulish side of Halloween decor. I like to keep it fun and cute, and these little guys fit the bill.

Anyway, here's what you need:

3 5 inch embroidery hoops

1/2 yard of fabric- solids or small prints work best

A printer and paper (or a really good eye!)

Felt- I used craft felt in white, black, and green

Fine-tip marker or fabric pen/paint

Hot glue

Scissors

A quick note- I kind of worked backwards from what might be logical to you. I put my fabric in the hoops first, then decorated them. You might want to go the opposite way. It doesn't really matter, as long as you get your decorated fabric centered in your hoop.

1. Cut fabric to fit your embroidery hoop. You should have enough to pull it taut, and have extra sticking out on all sides. Do this for all three hoops.

When you like how it looks, cut off the excess. I place my scissors right against the hoop and cut in a circle.

Finish up by drawing a line of hot glue along the edge of the fabric to seal it and hold it in place.

2. Print your embellishment patterns and cut them out. I found some .jpg images online, so just do a google search for what you want.

3. Trace your images onto felt and cut out.

4. Adhere to the fabric using hot glue or fabric glue. I'm a little bit of a lazy crafter, so I just hot glued them on.

5. I used a ruler to mark the lines on my mummy.

And don't forget his little green face!

6. Outline details with fine-tip marker or fine tipped bottle of fabric paint.

7. Add words to your fabric by freezer paper stenciling- or you could even use letter stickers or regular stencils. A great tutorial for freezer paper stenciling can be found here.

8. Determine how far apart you want your hoops to hang, and cut 2 strips of ribbon to match, leaving an extra 1/2 inch for gluing. Glue to the inside back of each embroidery hoop to connect them.

9. Tie a bow and glue it to the top.

10. Hang it up and admire your creation!

I know Halloween is almost here, but this didn't take me much time- you could easily make it in an afternoon (or evening!)

Scrappin' Wednesday- 9 months

Welcome to Scrappin' Wednesday! I'm so happy to share my layouts with you each week. If nothing else, it's helping me catch up on my pictures, and I have a lot of fun doing it.

This week, I put together a sweet circle layout for my baby's 9 month photos. I let the orange of his shirt and the blue of his sippy cup inspire me for the colors in the layout. I cropped different scrapbook papers into circles, then embellished each one. I finished it off with a title and some reminders about what my baby was like at this age.

Gifts for Baby Girls

About a month ago, I attended a baby shower for a girl in my church who was getting ready to have her first baby. (The baby was born last week- welcome Makenna!)

This was a great opportunity to make some of the baby gifts that I've been thinking about, thanks to blog-surfing, Pinterest, etc. I don't have any babies anymore, now that my youngest is 2 (boo-hoo!), but I have sister in laws and friends who are still having cute babies for me to pamper with gifts.

I know baby showers are supposed to be practical and all, especially for a first baby. But I just couldn't resist being impractical. I made baby Makenna a tutu, some satin baby slippers (perfect for blessing day), a hairbow holder, and some cute flowers for those baby headbands. Oh, and I did make some of the best burpcloths ever, or so they claim to be. I'm not totally impractical!

If you don't know how to make a tutu, it's really simple. You need ribbon long enough to wrap around a baby's waist, plus extra for ties. I just tie them on when they are so little. You could also use elastic, but it's harder.

Cut strips of tulle into double the length you want your tutu to be, plus about an inch for the knot. I used an old 3 month skirt of my daughter's to approximate.

Fold the strip in half. Loop the tulle strip around the ribbon as shown.

Push the ends of the strip over the ribbon and through the loop.

Pull tight and arrange on the ribbon as desired. Pull it tight enough to make it hold well, but not so tight that you scrunch it up. Repeat ad nauseum until you reach the point you want the tutu to tie around her waist, leaving ribbon on both sides of the tulle strips to tie.

Add any embellishments (I cut lengths of ribbon and tied them on just like the tulle strips), and you've got a cute little tutu!

I made these satin slippers from a baby bootie pattern found here.

The only change I made was to add a little loop in the back, then ribbon to tie around her ankles. This helps them stay on when all that kicking and grabbing of feet starts happening!

Here's the hairbow holder.

I used a Michael's frame, covered it in scrapbook paper, and printed out the words on photo paper to place in the frame. I hot glued and stapled ribbon to the back, heat-sealing both ends. This is where she can keep all her cute bows and flowers. I made her two to get started.

One is just a dollar store daisy that I took apart and reassembled with a button and hot glue. The other one is a singed satin flower that I made at Super Saturday last year and have been saving to give away to someone! (I look like a dork with flowers in my hair)

Finally, I sewed up a few burpcloths/changing pads/etc. The back is jersey, cut from a t-shirt, and the front is simple quilter's weight cotton. Once washed it is really soft and absorbent. Plus, you can use so many different fabrics, they turn out so cute, and are so easy to make!

I wrapped it all up in a plain white box with a pink ribbon and a hanging gift tag.

That way she wasn't expecting something useful like diapers or diaper cream.

And yes, I know that "unpractical" is not a word, but it just sounds more fun than "impractical"

Self-Esteem

When I was in middle school, I was pretty much a nerd.

I was in honors classes, I was in the band, and I wore glasses. I had very little fashion sense, and I sure wasn't anywhere near popular.

That's me on the left. Check those bangs!

I was tormented, on occasion, by those who were "cool". There was a boy who constantly made fun of me in my classes. I got pushed around in gym class. There was another boy who put a dead cricket in my shoes so it would squish all over my feet when I put them back on. There were days I spent in tears over comments people made to me, or boys who wouldn't like me, etc. Once, a boy who was kind of "cool" said he liked me, and I didn't believe it because, I thought there was no way someone like him would like someone like me.

I wouldn't wish my middle school years on anyone.

As I grew older, I learned to accept who I was, and embrace it. My honors classes got me scholarships. My band activity gave me a career. I learned a bit about how to present myself better physically. I married a wonderful man who thinks I'm beautiful. I wish I could go back to my 13 year old self and show her my life. I never would have believed it back then.

Most of these things just came with time and patience. I know, though, that the influence of others directly impacted my self-esteem. I was blessed to have a group of friends who loved me anyway. We could all be nerdy together. I knew that it didn't matter what I looked like or if my interests were "cool enough" for them. If I didn't have the friends I did growing up, I may not have made it through my teenage years.

That's me choking my friend Jen. These are just some of the great girls in my life!

I was also blessed with adults in my life who loved me. My parents were awesome and totally supportive. My leaders at church were great fun, and always loved me just as I was. They also taught me that I was a daughter of God, and could turn to Him for comfort.

Next weekend, Oct 21-23rd, Dove is sponsoring the Dove Self-Esteem Weekend. Dove is well known for encouraging real beauty, not the fake stuff we see in most magazines and other media. I plan on doing some activities with my six year old daughter. Even though the focus is on girls ages 8 and up, I know the influences of the world on girls starts early, and I want her to be prepared. I want her to know that she is smart, she is loving, she is kind, and she is beautiful, and that the world's opinions don't matter. I also want to teach her how to be the kind of friend I had growing up, and that she will always be confident that whoever she is, however she dresses, whatever she loves to do- I love her, and it is okay to love herself.

I hope you'll join in with me next weekend, and help our daughters, friends, nieces, granddaughters, or whoever is special to you, develop and grow their self-esteem.

Scrappin' Wednesday- Camping out

One of our family traditions is to go camping every summer. Since we have young kids (and I have often been pregnant while camping), we have just gone "campground" camping- tent camping at an organized campground. I think we are starting to outgrow campgrounds, though. Maybe next summer we will try dispersed camping- where you just claim a spot in the "wild" and go for it!

Anyway, last summer we camped outside of Payson, AZ, up on the Mogollon Rim. It was wonderfully cool and we had a great time. My usually grumpy baby was wonderfully happy and content the whole trip. It was amazing! We spent one day fishing on the lake, and we did a little hiking and exploring. Here's one page I put together to remember our trip:

A Pumpkin Party

I've always wanted to have a Halloween party for my kids and their friends. I don't know why.

With my youngest' son's birthday being in October, my original thought was to combine his birthday with Halloween for a fun party. But, it's kind of early (unless you are a super Halloween planner). I don't have costumes made yet, do you? So in the end, I just went with a fall/pumpkin themed party for him, and as an excuse to get all our friends together to play.

I started off with a food table. I went with orange and white for colors, and tried to focus on pumpkins for the decor.

I hung a banner with pictures of Drew at birth, six months, 12 months, and 18 months.

My mini-pumpkin wreath made a great backdrop for the table.

The other side had a little vignette with my son's picture and some pumpkins, fresh from the pumpkin patch!
(sorry for the glare!)

I also decorated with some balloons strung up with twine across the front of our patio. It was cheaper and looked better than helium-filled balloons!

We had chips and cider (with cute striped paper straws!)

and then lots of fall treats, like cupcakes:

Pumpkin Fluff dip with apples and crackers for dipping,

and the kids had fun playing some games-

but the trampoline and the playset were the biggest hits.

We also had a pumpkin craft that isn't pictured- I got a kit from Target with foam pumpkins and stickers, then just let the kids decorate a pumpkin.

As they left, they got to take home a treat bag. I didn't get a great picture, so I'll show you the one from my inspiration, found here:

I filled mine with candy corn, candy pumpkins, mini pumpkin notebooks, and stickers. I have to say, though, mine did not come out nearly this cute. I don't know what I did wrong, but mine were kind of squashed and misshapen. Maybe the kind of tissue paper I used? More floral tape? Here's what mine look like (cringe)

Anyway, we had a great time, and I had fun putting it all together.

Today, it is in the 80's. There was almost a chill in the air this morning. We got some rain last night. All is well in the world. Fall has finally come to Phoenix. Now the real question is, will it stay? Are the 100-degree temperatures really gone?

Scrappin' Wednesday

My son Kyle is a bit of a daredevil. I'm amazed we haven't been in the emergency room with him. Really, I am. He will jump off of anything, anywhere. You can imagine I had quite a few heart-pounding moments as I would rush to wherever he was about to jump.

This does pay off in some respects. He has no fear of the diving board, or jumping into the pool. When we were visiting my sister-in-law's family, this great shot was taken of my son mid-jump. It just captures his spirit completely, so I made a page just featuring this photo.

My Fall Wreath- Mini-Pumpkins

I've been so inspired by all the wreaths in blog-land this season. I've just been searching to find one I really wanted to do. In the end, I kind of came up with my own thing. Now, nothing is really "new" in blogland, so forgive me if you've seen this somewhere else, but I haven't, and I'm loving my wreath!

I found the mini-pumpkins at Michael's- with my 40% off coupon they cost about $3.00. The wreath form and burlap I already had, so this was a frugal project for me.

I took my wreath form,

wrapped it in strips of burlap (hot-glued on)

and hot glued pumpkins all over it.

I chose to just put them where they fit, but you could do them in straight even rows if you'd like.
I just did the front, around the top edge, and a row towards the center of the wreath.

I added a double bow made from wired ribbon, which I also used to hang the wreath from my front door.

While it took awhile to glue all the pumpkins on, it was a simple wreath to make, and I love the touch of fall it brings into my home.

My oldest daughter started dance in 2010. She enrolled in a combination class that taught tap, ballet, hip-hop, and tumbling. In June, they put on a recital at a local high school. My daughter's class performed a tap number to the Dixie Chick's "Some Days You Gotta Dance". It was adorable. I'm sure someday we will look back on the performance with chagrin, but for a bunch of five year olds, it was great!

My First Purse- The Layla Bag

I'm pretty sure I've discussed my general lack of sewing skills and downright fear of trying new things. So, really, I don't know what I was thinking when I decided that I could make a purse.

I won a free pattern from Linda at Ruffled Begonia (better known as the blog author of Craftaholics Anonymous). I chose the Layla Bag Pattern, which is available for purchase here. It's pretty adorable, don't you think?

I decided to also be brave and order designer fabric for this project. I had a vision in my head of what I wanted this purse to be, and regular old fabric from Joann wasn't going to cut it this time. I found this Citron Gray Color Story from Michael Miller and fell in love. It took me awhile to choose which fabrics I wanted the most. It's just gorgeous.

Anyway, while I waited for my fabric to arrive, I decided to test out the pattern on some scraps. I knew I would screw something up, and really didn't want to waste my "good" fabric. Does anyone else do this or I am I just totally neurotic? Anyway, I'm so glad I did, because my ruffles weren't sewed on evenly, I stitched my top strip on incorrectly, and I totally messed up the pocket (of all things). (All user error, I assure you. The pattern and directions are easy to follow). When my fabric came, I took my time and made sure to correct all my mistakes.

Now, it is my second first attempt at a purse, so there are definitely some imperfections, but overall, I LOVE how it turned out.

The fabrics work perfectly with the pattern. I get compliments every time I "take it out", which unfortunately, isn't often since I still usually have a toddler with me wherever I go.

Scrappin' Wednesday- Aquarium

Last summer, my mom came to town for a visit. We don't get to see Grandma very often, so we had lots of fun around Phoenix with her.

On this day, we visited the Aquarium at Arizona Mills. The kids loved it! There were lots of places for great photos, and the kids even got to touch some of the sea creatures (if they dared). My son, who was three at the time, had no fear. He reached right in and grabbed a starfish off the wall. I'm not sure that's what "hands-on" really meant, though. :)

Fringed Burlap Table Runner-- Pinterest Inspiration

I love Pinterest. If you haven't tried it out yet, DO IT! Even if you just use it casually, it's a great place to keep track of all the things you want to make, all the things that inspire you, etc.

The only problem with Pinterest is really the same problem I have with blog-surfing. There are so many great ideas, I often get caught up in pinning (or bookmarking) ideas, but never actually making them.

As fall is starting to show its face, I decided to make my first "fall" craft something inspired by Pinterest.

Though, technically, a table runner can be used anytime, it says "fall" to me because of the texture and color. Fall is all about neutrals mixed with rich colors of nature, textures you can see, and scents you can almost taste!

I pinned this tutorial for a Fringed Burlap Table Runner over at Cottage and Vine.

It was simple. It took a little time to unravel the edges for the fringe, but I just love how it looks.

I think the fringe gives it an elegance and a richness that the burlap alone didn't have.

I was so excited to get this post up that I didn't even iron it to take pictures. Oops. Pretend it's fully pressed and it looks even better!

Heelys- not just for kids!

Disclosure: I was provided with a free pair of Heelys in exchange for promoting them through a blog post and social media. The opinions given, however, are mine!

I was really excited when I found out Heelys was sending me a free pair to try out.

I pulled them out of the box. I was excited- they are sleek and fun, yet not too funky for this 30-something mom to wear around.

The materials they are made of look strong and sturdy. I thought- this will be a blast!

I used the enclosed tool to pop out the wheel covers. Then, my purple wheels snapped in easily, and I was ready to go.

Now, "heeling" isn't all that easy. I'm glad it came with instructions, because I really had no idea what I was doing.

I heeled around in my tiled bathroom for about ten minutes before I was brave enough to venture in public. Even after that time, I could only heel for a few seconds before I would fall off.

After another twenty minutes of practicing, I was sweating. Who knew these would provide such a workout?

After a little more practice, I feel comfortable heeling for short distances. I'm sure not going to be racing around the mall anytime soon, but it really is a lot of fun!

I can see this being a great way for me to keep up with my kids as they bike around the neighborhood. And, the shoes are stylish AND functional. I was worried how it would feel walking with the wheel in the shoe, but all us ladies are used to high heels, right? This really feels no different than a small pump. The wheel won't roll unless you MAKE it.

Speaking of making it roll, here are a few tips I'll pass along.

1. You are used to balancing on the ball of your feet. It feels completely unnatural to balance on your heels. Just make yourself lean back. I kept thinking I would fall on my behind, but I only got the "heeling" action to work once I relaxed and just let myself go.
2. A flat, smooth surface is the best for learning. Find a secluded place in case you do fall a few times. Who wants the neighborhood kids laughing at you? Here is Heelys' Safety Playbook.
3. Have fun! At first, I felt a little awkward. Heelys are for kids, right? But you can be a fun mom on these, and like I said, they are STYLISH, too!

Scrappin' Wednesday- Birthday Layout

Last year, my sister came for my birthday. It was a huge deal because she lived in Virginia Beach at the time, and I hadn't seen for almost three years. My husband surprised me by flying her out for my birthday! We had a blast- shopping (sans kids), eating out, and just playing. Now she is living in South Korea (her husband is in the Army) and I won't see her for at least another year. It truly was a birthday to treasure!

A Visit With Cupcake Wars Winner Ollie Cake

I love cupcakes.
I don't make them very often, and I certainly don't drive out of my way to buy them.
But when an opportunity to eat a really good cupcake falls into my lap, I'm sure going to take it.

Do you watch Cupcake Wars on Food Network? I watch it with my daughter religiously. She wants to be a pastry chef when she grows up, so she is fascinated by the baking competitions on FN.

We were recently excited to watch a show with one of our local cupcake bakers, Brady from Ollie Cake here in Phoenix. His episode was the Miss USA one, if you are a fan.

I was fairly confident he'd win, because his cupcakes were praised for their flavors throughout the competition. Still, we were a little worried at the end when we thought he wouldn't get 1000 cupcakes on his display before time was up. But, he made it, and was in fact, the winner of the show that week!

Recently, Brady put on a little class at Whole Foods, called Baking with your Children. He demonstrated some easy ways to get your kids involved in the kitchen, and talked about his time on Cupcake Wars.

Since my daughter is an aspiring chef, we already put most of the tips into action. But here's the most important thing I came away with, and am passing on to you-
Just let them do it. You could do it faster and with less mess, but they aren't going to really learn unless they get to do it themselves (with appropriate guidance for their age).

I did ask him if it was hard to get the 1000 cupcakes on the display, and he told us about a little trickery from the producers-- he said even though he had cupcakes frosted and ready to be placed, they made him hold it back until 15 minutes were left on the clock "for more drama". Those TV producers! So tricky.

Brady demonstrated his Orange-Scented Chocolate Campfire Cupcakes from the show, and when the demonstration was done, we got to eat one! They were delicious! It was the most moist chocolate cupcake I have tasted, and I loved the slight taste of orange throughout the cupcake. Orange and Chocolate go so well together!

Three Things Thursday

Ahem. As I mentioned yesterday, it's still slightly HOT here in Phoenix. Yet, I am slowly putting up my fall decor. Maybe if I keep dropping hints like that, the weather will cool down faster :)

Here's some great projects that caught my eye this week:

1. I really like these Jute-wrapped Pumpkins by That's My Letter. I like the rustic, homey feeling they give. I'd love to have some for my mantel!

2. If I ever pick up another hobby, it might be quilting. I really like this Bunting Quilt from Away We Go. Bunting is all the rage, and I love the fabrics she chose to match her baby's bedding for her nursery. It's darling!

3. I love this beautiful Birthday Party Budget Dessert Table from little lulu's nest. These are inexpensive ideas that could be adapted for any age and many different occasions. I love all the gorgeous party displays that we see around blogland, but sometimes I feel overwhelmed by the expense of all the accessories and a dozen different kinds of treats. This post shows you don't have to spend tons of money to make something beautiful!
